Overview

If you've always wanted to be involved in the classroom, helping children to understand how to communicate and interpret this world we've built for them, here's your chance to set out on a highly-rewarding and fulfilling new career.

The government is pushing hard for better adult to child ratios in the classroom. Money is being pumped into schools across the country to help them take on more Teaching Assistants, Classroom Assistants and Learning Support Assistants as this is regarded as the quickest, most cost-effective way to improve the staffing situation. So, in these difficult times, you will never have a better opportunity to get yourself qualified to operate in this vibrant, positive educational environment.

Our brand new “Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools” course is suitable for all support staff roles in schools. The course aims to enable learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools. It prepares students to support the Teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school, as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and to acquire the skills of learning.

The course also helps to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge, and aims to deliver an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.

It will develop your knowledge and understanding of all the critical areas you need in a school setting, including safeguarding of children, communication skills, and understanding the school context and environment.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course has four units, and students must successfully complete each unit. The Units are as follows:

* Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

* Schools as organisations

* Understand child and young person development

* Understand how to safeguard the well - being of children and young people

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Perhaps surprisingly, the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools has no entry requirements, other than personal motivation, desire and a genuine interest in the subject matter.

As long as you also have a good general standard of education, you will gain immense benefit from it.

COURSE MATERIALS

One of the key benefits of studying with Distance Learning Plus is that we deliver the entire package of course materials in a single dispatch. This enables our students to get a real feel for the overall structure and content of the course, and chart their progress much more effectively. The modular method of delivery favoured by other providers breaks up and interrupts the learning process. It actively prevents students from moving faster through sections they are more confident with, or taking more time over the deeper concepts that require more thought and comprehension.

There are three types of qualification:

1. Awards (1 to 12 credit units)

2. Certificates (13 to 36 credit units)

3. Diplomas (37 or more credit units)

Every unit and qualification has a credit value and a level. Each credit represents 10 notional hours of learning, which is the amount of time an average learner would take to complete a single unit. Levels indicate difficulty, and vary from entry-level (1), to the most advanced or highest level 8. To give the reader a broad comparator, GCSEs (A* to C) are level 2, GCE A-levels are level 3, and a Ph.D. is a level 8.

This Focus Awards Level 3 Award for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Course attracts a Credit Value of 12 on the QCF system on successful completion.

NO FINAL EXAM . . . .

If the prospect of exams frightens the life out of you, there is even more good news. There is no final exam!

The low price of the course includes dedicated tutor support, regular critique and feedback, and all assignments are marked by one of our professional tutors. You can even pay by instalments if funds are tight.

Successful learners on this course will achieve the Focus Awards Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning (QCF).

This is awarded by Focus Awards, an Ofqual recognised awarding organisation and is a regulated qualification. Details can be found on the Focus Awards website and the Ofqual Register of regulated qualifications; http://register.ofqual.gov.uk/. Once you have this award you will be able to further enhance your employability in the sector, industry or area of interest by continuing your studies to the next level if you wish.

All of our courses satisfy the requirements of the appropriate level of the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). They recognise that the student has gained a good knowledge and understanding of a particular subject area, which is appropriate for many job roles. Many of them also result in qualifications on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), which carry credits that can be accumulated towards higher level qualifications.

Focus Awards are regulated by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England.

Before enrolling on a course, students should make sure that they are following a course of study that results in formal recognition of their knowledge and skills by a reputable awarding body such as Focus Awards

Can anyone do the course?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands of the course. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The course materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style.

In addition to the comprehensive course materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What’s actually in the course?

The course covers the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration, plus research to carry out. This will also help you to keep track of how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples in the course materials, but personal research is expected at this level, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is the course accredited?

This course is accredited by Focus Awards. Successful students will be awarded a Focus Awards Level 3 Award at the end of their course

The measurable learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked, using Ofqual Qualification and Credits Framework (QCF) descriptors. The course content and delivery have been specifically designed to meet the needs of students preferring to learn from home using distance learning methods.

What will I get from the course materials?

The course materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

How do I send in my work?

You submit your assignments one at a time for marking through our iLearn it Easy online portal. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review or rework the one you submitted.

What happens if I fail an assignment?

Don't worry, your tutor give you some pointers as to where you could improve, and will ask you to resubmit your assignment once you have reworked it.

What do I receive when I order the course?

Is there a word count for my assignments?

There are generally no word counts given for the tutor marked assignments, but it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with the course. Many students start slowly at first, particularly if it's some time since they carried out any study, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Will the course help me get a job?

Why did you decide to become a teaching assistant?

I was initially working as a lunchtime supervisor at my son’s school; this was ideal for me as I had a daughter who was in nursery part-time, so the hours were ideal. When my daughter moved up to primary school, I wanted to spend more time working at the school as I really enjoyed working with the children and all of my colleagues.

I enrolled on a course to train to become a teaching assistant; I completed my theory work and carried out working as a lunchtime supervisor. The head teacher at the school was very supportive and let me assist in year 3, so I had the opportunity to work on a more one-to-one basis with the children and different members of staff.

I was very fortunate that a position was available at the school, so when I completed my training, I was offered the job.

What will I do?

Working as a teaching assistant will typically involve:

• Helping children who require extra support

• Carrying out administrative tasks (e.g. ordering supplies)

• Getting the classroom ready for lessons

• Clearing away equipment at the end of lessons

• Assist the teacher in managing class behaviour

How much can I expect to earn?

The starting salary for a teaching assistant is typically around £12,000 per year, although this will depend on the area of the country you are in, and the number of hours you work.

How many hours a week will I work?

Typical working hours are 30-40 per week.
