Overview

The course enables anybody who has an interest in web design to easily build their own web presence while learning how the various technologies fit together, whether they are doing it for business or to simply claim their space on the World Wide Web where they can store their photographs for everyone to see.

If you've always wondered how HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) works or what FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is, you'll love this course. It explains both of those terms and much, much more in simple, common sense language, and demystifies the ethereal world "out there" beyond your router or modem. Better still, this fantastic course requires no previous experience, just a passion for the subject!

Since the Internet became a viable communication medium just 20 or so years ago, it has taken on global significance in every professional walk of life, and in every aspect of our private and domestic lives. It's true to say that children can't be educated without knowledge of the Internet today, and virtually all the systems we use and take for granted, from reheating food in a microwave to doing our shopping online are almost wholly dependent on computers and computing power . . . . . and how to effectively use the Internet.

If you don't understand computers or the Internet today, it almost relegates you to caveman status. But there are still a surprising number of people of all ages who struggle with the technology and language. This is why we have designed this course specifically to teach the essential knowledge and understanding required. Once the student has this knowledge and understanding, they will have a solid foundation on which to build, to take into the workplace, and to operate on a level playing field. A glance at the titles of the individual modules (click the ‘Course Outline’ tab above) shows you just what this fantastic course is about. From a simple introduction of what the Internet actually is, its history and the tools you need to properly exploit it, through the use of e-mail (even going through the basics of setting up an e-mail account) and simple web design. The course then moves on to more advanced concepts such as CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), image formats, and getting your information into a usable form that everybody can access from anywhere in the world. You will receive instruction and tutorials on all the design elements required to build your own website, and the last unit deals with choice of domain name, buying web space, the "black art" of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), and launching your site onto the World Wide Web. By the time you complete the course, you will know everything you need to boost your understanding of, and confidence in, this fascinating subject.

Who is this for?

Anybody with a reasonable standard of general education will be able to cope with the academic demands. If you can read and write well enough to complete a job application, and have a good grasp of basic maths (add, subtract and divide) you should have no problems. The learning materials are written in simple everyday language and the answers to your assignments will be completed in the same style. In addition to the comprehensive learning materials provided, you will receive a Study Guide to assist you, and, of course, you will have the support of your tutor.

What will I cover?

Your studies will cover the areas of study listed above through detailed exploration of the subject matter. You will also receive tasks and prompts for further personal exploration and research to carry out so that you can gauge how much you have learned. There are plenty of examples to help you but personal research is a prerequisite, so be prepared to use your initiative to fully answer the assignments.

Is it accredited?

This is a non-regulated qualification endorsed by Focus Awards under the FQP scheme.

Although the learning materials are comprehensive and informative, we do expect you to carry out your own investigations. After all, if you are not prepared to do your own research, you should be asking yourself if this is the right subject choice for you!

Your work is not graded; assignments are simply identified as Pass, Fail or Referred. For assignments not passed at first attempt, your tutor will advise on the improvements to be made to obtain a Pass on a reworking. A certificate of achievement will be issued by Focus Awards on successful completion of all the assignments.

Is this a nationally recognised qualification?

No, this is a non-regulated qualification which has been endorsed by Focus Awards under their FQP scheme

What will my studies prepare me for?

The learning materials and accompanying tasks will help you to develop the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully complete the tutor marked assignments. The tasks are designed to encourage you to apply your knowledge, and help you to develop relevant research and academic writing skills.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you some pointers as to where you could improve.

How do I send in my work?

You email your assignments one at a time for marking. This enables your tutor to properly assess the standard and style of your work for each section, and give you feedback which will be used on your next assignment; a process of continuous improvement. On obtaining feedback and comment you will either move on to the next assignment or review and rework the one you submitted.

What do I receive once I enrol?

You will receive login details to our Online Student Community. Here you will be able to access your course materials, contact your tutor, submit your work, and interact with other learners via the online forums.

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

Your studies should be completed within 12 months, but can be extended for a small fee if your tutor supports your request. As a rough guide, depending on your circumstances and commitment, you can complete your studies in about 100 study hours. There are no other deadlines to meet.

Is there a word count for my assignments?

Although a word count is not given for the tutor marked assignments, it is important that you demonstrate to your tutor that you have fully understood the questions; a comprehensive Study Guide is included with your materials. Many students start slowly at first, but your tutor will give guidance to help and encourage you to improve.

Do I need a computer to complete my studies?

Yes, you will need access to email and the internet to access your materials, submit assignments and do research. Most students also find word-processing their assignments is much more convenient than writing by hand.

Are the learning materials paper-based or online?

All of the learning materials are online. You will receive a login to the online student community when you enrol, where you will be able to access the full set of materials and assessment tasks for your course.

What is a web designer?

web designers may also have the name Multimedia Programmer as they will create websites using many multimedia types to draw webpage together. Web designers mainly:

• Meet and discuss with clients about the upcoming website

• Plan and design the website

• Test and publish the web page

Web designers can create websites for many different businesses with different background. These could scope widely from a small local beauty business to a large clothing company.

When did you decide to become a web designer?

At school I had always enjoyed ICT and any subject that allowed me to design and be creative. I went on to study ICT at college to enable me to study Multimedia at university. Throughout my time at university I worked voluntarily for a small clothing business, they wanted their business promoting wider so I suggested the website. From doing so the company grew larger over time and on completion of my degree the company then decided to take me on as a paid employee. I am still with the company now (keeping the site updated), which is highly successfully and which I thoroughly enjoy. I do also work from home for other small businesses.

What activities do web designers do on a daily basis?

As a web designer you could find yourself dealing with many tasks depending which stage you are with different web designs. You will find yourself in meetings with potential and existing clients to discuss what needs to be included in the design, and perhaps what needs improving. Designs will have to be made using software and different multimedia features to begin to create the web page. The designs have to be tested and put into place for public use.

What qualifications do I need to become a web designer?

Web designers do not usually need qualifications, however employers will always be looking for those who have experience or those who are educated to some degree. Courses can be completed in programmes such as Dreamweaver or Javascript to give those wanting to go into designing some knowledge. Experience with writing codes and HTML will also be needed. You can complete courses such as a BTEC or foundation degree in web design or multimedia for example.

How much can I expect to earn as a Web Designer?

Starting income – from £15,000 a year

Average income - £30,000

Self – employed web designers can charge their own individual rates.
